Hello. I think I have a problem, but I'm not sure. I'm hoping the community can confirm that I have an issue (or that I don't), and then suggest some steps I might take to fix it.
I have a RAMPS 1.4 board running my Prusa Mendel v2. I bought it assembled, and it works well. I've a couple minor complaints, but nothing worth noting here.
I've just added the Reprapdiscount Smart Controller. It also has worked successfully for me.
Here's the would-be issue: if the Arduino is not getting USB power, the Smart Controller doesn't work. (There is power coming from my ATX supply.) The smart controller clearly has some power, as the LCD glows slightly, and blinks somewhat, but no amount of controller trimpot adjustment brings any sort of sense to the display, booting or otherwise.
Question 1) This is a problem, right? I see other people running without USB power on youtube.
Question 2) Assuming the answer to (1) is yes, where might I look to rectify this issue? I'm guessing I might have a cold solder joint or some such.
