I've built a mendel90--it is slightly different--I am learning as I go. My problem right now is that my motors turn fine in one direction, but they just hum the other direction. this has me going crazy because they will turn in reverse just fine when backtracking after pressing the endstop. They also turn fine if I flip the connector, but then they don't go the other way. I've tried increasing the current on the stepper drivers--But no luck.
I have also tried to use an LCD+Encoder board to control it, I get the same problem.
I am using RAMPS 1.4,

I am completely new to this and am starting to become discouraged, as I don't know anyone who is even remotely interested in this sort of thing so I am on my own--Hoping that this forum, can help me out a bit.
