i upload an schematics for driving the heatbed in 24 volts without modifying the ramps, its dosent matter how do you connect the 2 and 3 of the heatbed becouse its just a resistor, and the mosfet dosent need any protection becouse theres no any inductive load that can generate reverse current, i am using the irfp150n its over rated for powering a heatbed, but i choose it becouse it has the only one at hand, you can use a smaller mosfet, but i prefer that mosfet becouse its relative cheap and fast enought, plus the heat dissipation its not an issue, anyway you had to atach a heatsink to the mosfet, dont forget the thermal grease, and the other advantage is that scince the current its not circulating trought the ramps the arduino and ramps runs cooler and prevent undesired reseting due the heat, i used two resistor for diving the current and a diode for protecting from any overvoltage.
i am powering the heatbed with 2 old car batterys, heatbed get hot really fast and consumes less current also
